EDpunks who?

17 Jan

Edpunks is the idea of teaching and learning through a system of doing it youself using internet and other approaches, it avoids things such as blackboard, powerpoint, where you are not really learning just storing information.

The whole idea is getting your hands dirty, it does not matter in which way you go about learning how to do something, the important thing is that your doing it yourself, and learning from your experience.

However there are many critics of this notion, not because its not a great movement but the lack that Anya Kamenetz fails to explain. Kamenetz explains that we can learn using other tools but has what may only be described as a very naive understanding of education (including online education).

In one blog someone described:

¬†“The way do-it-yourself learning is depicted in her guide, it substitutes presentations, resources and materials from professors and books for presentations, resources and materials online through videos and online documents,” he says. “There is no sense that it is do-it-yourself learning; it’s just putting digital in place of traditional learning materials.”

Freedom Of Ecology Response…

13 Jan

Do you agree with the mashing and remixing of others works while respecting the creator? Why or why not?

It very interesting that many of us share the same idea on the mashing and remixing of others work, yet at the same time giving credit to the owner of that production.

Some beliefs were:

I agree because it gives a chance to connect with others.

Through mashing and remixing we are able to build onto and update the work  of another based upon modification.

In doing so there is the possibility of a better product emerging… However, we¬†must acknowledge their efforts and respect intellectual property rights.

Everyone understood the point that Lawrence Lessig was trying to get the mass to understand. The belief that individuals using shared culture to communicate an audience and to mediate a relationship with each other. He quotes from a video by Julian Sanchez explaining what remix is about,

Remix isn’t just about an individual doing something alone in his basement, it becomes an active social community. It doesn’t yield a different kind of product in the end but it potentially changes the way we relate to each other.

The point of mashing and remixing isn’t about changing others work but rather is enhancing in a culture people can relate too.

Freedom of Ecology?

11 Jan

In this video, Lawrence Lessig¬†tries to educate us on the importances and values of building the freedom of limited regulations as well as respecting the creators of many social medias. Lawrence stresses the fact that today many restrictions has been imposed on videos/comments that have been written by people and than been altered or “mashed” by others. He calls this ecology which is respect between two cultures and in this case between the culture of sharing and commercial. He believes that we need the freedom to have commercials and the oppurtunity to build this by using works of others. By this we create two things :

You can listen to Lessig describe this here.

1. Individuals using shared culture to communicate to an audience.

2. Social  remix is used to mediate  relationships with each other

Another Example here: Walt Disney was known for his works that were also built from past experiences or ideas. All of his great works were things that were in the domain that he “remixed and mashed up” to come up with this add on remix of creativity. ¬†He is known as a remix extraordinaire who was attacked by the law “Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act”.

Another famous remixer who created Star Wars, created a website to invite people to use their creativity to produce a new generation of attention towards this extraordinary icon.

In conclusion the key is that a Copyright policy is not just about how to incentivize the production of certain kind of artistic commodity, its is about what level of control we are going to permit exercised  over our social reality! If we expand one side then we limit which may be the more important side.

Basically he wants to educate the mass about how social medias have restricted and banned the essential part of our culture and that is the ability to take an individuals work and enhance it and remix it while giving respect to the creator as well as creating something better or different. This mash up he calls it ecology-the relationship between these two cultures that “conservatives” have limited and put many regulations on.

Story View : Science Classroom #2

11 Jan

Assignment : Dig through Google Maps Street View to find an interesting setting for your story. Let your imagination go wild and tell the story of what occurred in that space. Relate that story to a specific time in Geological History, How did it occur? What are some hypothesis for this creation. What are some rocks that exist in that area, and what are some famous formations.

Rock Types Found on Main Trail

  • Igneous
    • None
  • Metamorphic
    • Dolomitic marble
    • Schistose marble
    • Gneiss
  • Sedimentary
    • None
Rock Units

  • Stockbridge marble
  • Basal Marble Member of Wallomsac Schist
Minerals of Interest

  • Garnets
Interesting Geologic Features

  • Waterfall
  • Potholes

The most obvious feature at Kent Falls is, of course, the falls. Actually, they are a series of falls and cascades. Multiple falls and cascades, such as these, generally form where the bedrock contains alternating hard and soft layers. This part of Connecticut was once made of coral reefs, offshore from the northwestern part of the state. As the Iapetos Ocean closed when Europe and Africa moved our way, these reefs were squeezed and buried under other rock. With increasing heat and pressure, the minerals in these rocks recrystallized, and the former coral reefs turned to marble. Sand and mud around the reefs formed the impurities in the marble that cause some layers to be more resistant to the effects of the flowing water.

My Touch 4G

Assignment: Take a picture of a common ever day object and manipulate the colors.

I used the website, pixlr.com as my “photoshop” and played with the saturation and the hue of the picture changing up the color, I also used this vib thing to make it have that vibration look.
